MVR Evaporator for Landfill Leachate Treatment

Landfill leachate treatment presents significant challenges due to its complex composition, high alkalinity, high silicon content, and strong scaling potential during concentration. In this project, a customized MVR (Mechanical Vapor Recompression) forced circulation evaporation system was developed to efficiently concentrate the high-salt leachate while ensuring long-term operational reliability. 

Equipment: MVR and Forced circulation evaporator;

Feed composition:  VAI filtrate;

Treatment capacity: 20,000kg/h;

Evaporation capacity: 18,000kg/h;

Inlet concentration: 2%, the concentrate is easily crystallized after cooling;

Installed power: 1208kw;
Power consumption per ton water: 50kwh.

Description

Project Overview

The feed stream treated in this project was a highly alkaline landfill leachate containing a high concentration of silicon compounds and various inorganic salts. Due to the strong electrochemical corrosion effect on titanium materials under high-temperature conditions, careful material selection was required to ensure long-term and reliable operation of the evaporation system.

To determine the most suitable construction materials, our R&D team conducted a three-month intensive corrosion resistance evaluation under actual operating conditions. Based on the test results, optimized material selections were implemented to ensure equipment durability, corrosion resistance, and stable operation.

Following silicon removal, evaporation concentration, and solid-liquid separation, the concentrated solution was successfully recovered and recycled back into the production process, achieving significant economic value through resource recovery and waste minimization.

Process Solution   

A customized MVR (Mechanical Vapor Recompression) forced circulation evaporation system was developed for the treatment of high-salt landfill leachate.

During operation, the feed solution is continuously circulated through the forced circulation evaporator and concentrated until reaching supersaturation. The concentrated slurry is then transferred to a centrifuge for solid-liquid separation.

The recovered crystalline salts can be discharged or further utilized according to process requirements, while the separated mother liquor is returned to the evaporator system for further concentration. This closed-loop process improves resource recovery efficiency and minimizes wastewater discharge.

Process Flow:

Feed Solution → MVR Forced Circulation Evaporation → Supersaturation → Centrifuge Separation → Salt Recovery → Mother Liquor Recycling

System Configuration 

The complete MVR evaporation system mainly consists of:

•  Forced circulation evaporator

Designed for high-concentration and high-salt wastewater treatment, providing excellent circulation performance and reducing scaling risk.

•  MVR vapor recompression unit

Recycles secondary vapor generated during evaporation and significantly reduces fresh steam consumption.

•  Vapor demister system

Removes entrained droplets from secondary vapor to ensure clean vapor enters the compressor and extends MVR equipment service life.

•  Centrifuge separation system

Separates crystalline salts from concentrated slurry to achieve effective solid-liquid separation.

•  DCS automatic control system

Enables intelligent monitoring and stable operation of the entire evaporation process.
