Industrial Multi-Effect Evaporation Crystallization System for Barium Chloride Production

A barium chloride evaporation crystallization project successfully designed, manufactured, and delivered by our company.  

The adopted process combines multi-effect evaporation concentration, flash cooling crystallization, crystallization aging, centrifugal separation, drying, and graded mother liquor treatment. In particular, a staged evaporation strategy was implemented to address the key challenge of calcium chloride impurity separation, enabling efficient barium chloride recovery while simultaneously achieving calcium chloride by-product valorization. The complete system includes:

1. A 10TPH Triple-effect evaporator for BaCl2 evaporation and crystallization;

2. A 5TPH Triple-effect evaporator for secondary recovery of BaCl2  from mother liquor;

3. A Hybrid Calcium Chloride Concentration Evaporator System for resource recycle and by product production.

Description

With the rapid expansion of industries such as electronic ceramics, new energy materials, pharmaceutical intermediates, chlor-alkali chemicals, and water treatment, the global demand for high-purity barium chloride continues to grow at a steady pace. As a critical inorganic chemical raw material, the product’s purity, particle size distribution, energy efficiency, and operational stability have become key factors directly influencing a manufacturer’s market competitiveness and profitability.

Recently, our company successfully completed the design, manufacturing, and delivery of a barium chloride evaporation crystallization project. Based on the unique physicochemical properties of barium chloride solution and the client’s specific production requirements, we delivered a fully optimized integrated process solution featuring:

• Multi-effect evaporation concentration 

• Flash cooling crystallization 

• Graded mother liquor treatment

The implemented system enables highly efficient, stable, and energy-saving production of high-purity barium chloride, while significantly improving product yield and process consistency. At the same time, it demonstrates our company’s strong capability in delivering advanced, customized evaporation crystallization systems for complex high-salinity chemical processes.

Project Background

At present, the mainstream production route for barium chloride in China is the:

Barite Reduction Roasting – Hydrochloric Acid Leaching Process (Acid Process)

This process is well-established and highly reliable, offering strong raw material adaptability and relatively controllable operating costs. As a result, it has become the dominant industrial production route in the market today.

In this project, the barium chloride solution is generated through this acid-process route. After upstream leaching, purification, and impurity removal, the clarified barium chloride solution is fed into the evaporation and crystallization system for further concentration and crystallization processing.

Considering the specific characteristics of the barium chloride solution, including high salinity, strong corrosiveness, and a strong tendency to crystallize, our company designed a fully customized process system for the client, including:

• Triple-effect evaporation concentration system

• Flash cooling crystallization system

• Crystallization  system

• Centrifugal separation system

• Drying system

• Graded mother liquor treatment system

The entire plant is designed for continuous and fully automated operation. It effectively addresses key industry challenges such as scaling, equipment blockage, and complex impurity separation, ensuring stable long-term operation and high product quality.

Core Process Flow

The barium chloride solution is first concentrated in a triple-effect evaporation system to reach a supersaturated state. The concentrated liquor then enters a flash cooling crystallization system for controlled crystal formation, followed by crystallization tanks to improve crystal quality.

The resulting slurry is separated by centrifugation, and the wet crystals are dried to obtain the final barium chloride product.

The overall Process Flow is as below: 

Barium Chloride Solution → Triple-Effect Evaporation System → Flash Cooling Crystallization → Crystallization Tanks  → Centrifugation → Drying → Finished Product

Project Challenge: Separation of Calcium Chloride Impurities

One of the major technical challenges in acid-process barium chloride production is: Separation and Control of Calcium Chloride Impurities

The solubility of calcium chloride is significantly higher than that of barium chloride:

• 20°C: 74.5 g /100 g water

• 100°C: 159 g /100 g water

Therefore, during the evaporation and concentration process, barium chloride preferentially reaches supersaturation and crystallizes out, while calcium chloride mainly remains in the mother liquor.

Based on this physicochemical characteristic, our company designed a: “Staged Evaporation + Graded Mother Liquor Treatment” Process. 

This process not only improves the purity of barium chloride products, but also realizes efficient by-product resource recovery.

1.  10 t/h Triple-Effect Evaporation System for Initial Barium Chloride Solution

A 10 t/h triple-effect evaporation system is first used to concentrate the initial barium chloride solution.

At this stage:

• Barium chloride preferentially reaches supersaturation and crystallizes out;

• Mother liquor containing calcium chloride is continuously discharged;

• Multi-effect heat recovery significantly reduces steam consumption;

• Stable and continuous operation is achieved.

2.  5 t/h Triple-Effect Evaporation System for Mother Liquor Treatment

Although the discharged mother liquor contains a relatively high concentration of calcium chloride, it still contains a considerable amount of barium chloride.

To further improve product recovery, our company designed an additional 5 t/h triple-effect evaporation system for secondary concentration of the mother liquor.

This system mainly achieves:

• Further recovery of barium chloride;

• Improved overall product yield;

• Continuous increase of calcium chloride concentration;

• Reduced material loss.

Through this process design, the customer not only maintains product quality, but also significantly improves the overall economic performance of the project.

3.  Calcium Chloride Resource Recovery System

After the secondary evaporation process, the calcium chloride concentration in the mother liquor becomes much higher.

For this high-calcium mother liquor, a Dedicated Calcium Chloride Evaporation Concentration System
 is used to further concentrate the high-calcium mother liquor and finally produce calcium chloride dihydrate product.

This design not only effectively reduces wastewater discharge, but also realizes by-product resource recovery, further enhancing the overall economic value of the project.

Conclusion

Through the implementation of this project, the customer successfully achieved:

• Stable production of high-purity barium chloride

• Significant reduction in steam consumption

• Efficient resource utilization of mother liquor

• Recovery and valorization of calcium chloride by-products

• Fully automated continuous production operation

• Long-term stable and reliable equipment performance
