Flake Calcium Chloride Dihydrate Production plant

Flake Calcium chloride dihydrate production plant consistes of:

  1. A multiple-effect evaporator: the feed calcium chloride solution was concentrated up to 68% minimum;
  2. A rotary drum flaker: the concentrated calcium chloride liquor was transformed into wet flakes;
  3. A fluidized-bed dryer: the wet flakes were dried, and were cooled till ambient temperature before packing.

Description

Overview of Calcium Chloride

    Calcium chloride is available in various forms depending on its hydration state and application needs. These include:

   •Calcium chloride solution

   •Calcium chloride hexahydrate (CaCl₂·6H₂O)

   •Calcium chloride tetrahydrate (CaCl₂·4H₂O)

   •Flake calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl₂·2H₂O)

   •Anhydrous calcium chloride (powder or honeycomb form)

    Calcium Chloride Dihydrate (CaCl₂·2H₂O), is available in both granular and flake forms depending on the production process and end-use requirements. Typical industrial-grade products contain 74% to 80% CaCl₂ by weight.

Challenges in Flake Calcium Chloride Dihydrate Production

    In industrial production, the drying of calcium chloride, whether in dihydrate or anhydrous form, presents several technical challenges due to the compound’s physical and thermodynamic characteristics:

(1) Melting behavior during drying

    Calcium chloride exhibits melting-like behavior during the drying process. As the temperature increases, it passes through its critical solubility transition, dissolving in its own water of crystallization. This phenomenon causes the material to soften and bind together, resulting in agglomeration or lump formation.

(2) High dehydration temperature required

    The saturated solution of calcium chloride under standard pressure has a melting point of about 170°C. In the production of flake calcium chloride dihydrate, the calcium chloride solution must first be concentrated to saturation before being cooled and solidified into flakes. This process requires:

   •Sufficient thermal supply to reach the desired concentration through evaporation

   •Precise temperature control to ensure stable supersaturation and uniform crystallization during flaking

(3) Complex Heat and Mass Balance Calculations

    Drying calcium chloride differs significantly from standard surface moisture removal processes. In addition to removing free water, the crystalline water (water of crystallization) must also be extracted. This requires accounting for both the latent heat of vaporization and the heat of reaction involved in breaking the crystal lattice. As a result, the thermal calculations for calcium chloride drying are more complex and must consider phase transitions, enthalpy changes, and mass transfer behavior across temperature gradients.

Equipment Description

    Flake calcium chloride dihydrate production plant produces flake calcium chloride dihydrate from calcium chloride solution, through concentration, cooling flaking and drying.

    The plant consists of following section:

    1). A double-effect forced circulation evaporator completed with a final concentrator, concentrating calcium chloride solution up to around 68%- 70%;

    2).A rotary drum flaker, transforming concentrated calcium chloride liquid into wet calcium chloride flakes.

    3).A fluidized bed dryer, drying the wet calcium chloride flakes in further, and producing 78% calcium chloride dihydrate or 94% calcium chloride anhydrous alternatively.

    4).An automatic weighing and packing machine, 25kg/bag.

System Advantage

    1).The whole process including calcium chloride solution concentration by a multi-effect evaporator, concentrated calcium chloride liquor being flaked into wet flakes, and dried by a a fluidized bed dryer, can be fully automatic.

    2).No need of manual operation of feeding into the fluidized bed granulator, reducing the operating intensity and providing a good operating environment.

    4).Muti-stage washing and demister are adopted at each venting point,  to ensure the dust removal effect while recovering materials, and ensure the exhaust gas meets the environmental protection requirements.

    5).Simple equipment structure , fewer operating points, no maintenance required for the main body, and regular conveying machine adopted for other related auxiliary machines, less maintenance.

    6).With this process, one machine can produce various products, 77% calcium chloride dihydrate flakes and 94% calcium chloride anhydrous flakes can be produced alternatively according to the need.

    7).Smaller occupied area and less investment.
